How can she really be gone? It all went so fast.
But why does it matter so much to me, you may ask.
It’s been 20 years since I lost my own mother
and never have I tried to fill her place with another.
‘Til I met this woman, just the mother of a friend
an extraordinary woman whose love had no end.
Despite the fact that she had her own four children
she remembered facts in my life as if her own.
It was always a treat when she came with Liz,
to see her smiling face, as she sat in her own special place.
She loved to listen to the choir in which Liz sang
as did many of the rest of us who are here today.
I would always stop to give her a kiss and see how she was doing
and, no matter how she felt, her face was always glowing..
As the years went by, more and more people came to know her
this lovely woman who would come church with her daughter.
One soon learned that her knowledge ran far and wide
on how to bring up a family in which one could take pride
We could all see the pride written all over Mary’s face
as she spoke of her various children, and great-grands.
So, thank you, Liz for letting me borrow your mother
since my own. I no longer have.
I have no doubt that I will miss her greatly
as will many others in her adopted parish of OLPH.
Holiday singing in the choir will never be the same again
as many of us will look down at your empty space.
Goodbye, dear Mary, “Mom”; may you rest in peace.
