Obituary of Maria G. Liberty-Makris

Maria G. Liberty-Makris, age 89, passed on Sunday September 18, 2022, with a smile on her face and joy in her heart, doing something she enjoyed.  She was born on the island of Kefalonia, Greece on the 8th day of September 1933 and schooled in both Argostoli and Kerkyra, Greece during WWII, before immigrating to the United States in 1953.  All who knew her, knew a strong woman, full of life, who was fearless facing any diversity thrown in her direction, both in Europe and the USA.  A gifted artist/designer having an immense passion for performing arts, with one of her greatest passions to frequently attend performances at the Metropolitan Opera House (and her many friends there).  She greatly enjoyed time with both family and friends. A gourmet cook, who loved to share a delicious meal with family, friends, neighbors and anyone that was close enough to ask for a plate. As it was always her heartfelt pleasure to do so. And her trips to a casino; even up to her final day.

Maria is survived by her loving family, her three children Dean, Gary and Denise, and her extended family Amy, Linda and Nicole; cherished Yiayia to Kirk.  Although she would never admit it without banter, she so enjoyed and deeply loved her sister Irene Magafan and brother-in-law Harry (deceased) and brother George Makris and sister-in-law Julia, speaking with them as frequently as possible, along with all her nieces and nephews.  She was a beacon of the Greek Orthodox community and church, never forgetting her heritage; especially as a proud niece of Argyrios Fantis, a philanthropist, businessman, founder of A. Fantis School in Brooklyn and the foundation of many churches built in the metropolitan area, as she was dedicated to follow in his footsteps; as he was the very person who sponsored her to enter the USA.

She shall be greatly missed, leaving a mark on all of our hearts with all the love she shared, shall never be forgotten, may her memory be eternal.

The family will receive their friends on Friday 4-8pm at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension located at 101 Anderson Ave, Fairview, NJ.  All are asked to assemble on Saturday 11am in the Cathedral of the Ascension for funeral services followed by internment at Brookside Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Ascension.
