Obituary of Joyce A Rowe

 

Rowe, Joyce, A. née: Allan, age 87, of New York City, passed on Wednesday November 9, 2022. Born in Brooklyn, she attended the Dalton School in Manhattan and was a graduate of Smith College (class of 1956). She later earned a PhD in English at Columbia University and published Equivocal Endings in Classic American Novels: The Scarlet Letter, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Ambassadors, The Great Gatsby (Cambridge University Press, 1988). At Fordham University, where she was an Associate Professor in the Department of English, she treasured her colleagues and opportunities to engage with students. She and her husband Gerald (Gerry) established strong roots on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, especially through involvement in local politics in the late 1960s and ‘70s. She was predeceased by her sister, Diane Goodman, and is survived by Gerry and her loving daughters, Claudia and Nina Rowe, along with their families – Dan, Gabriel, and Maiselle in Seattle, and Glenn and Ezra Hendler in New York.
