Obituary of Helen Balafas

Helen Balafas (nee: Spetalas,) age 96, of Fort Lee, passed away on Wednesday January 4, 2023. She was born in Manhattan, NY on June 26, 1926 to the Late Nicholas and Sonia (nee: Petinos) Spetalas. Beloved wife of the late Angelo Balafas. Loving mother to Nicholas and Cora, and spouses Jeannie and Michael. Devoted grandmother to Evan, Laina, Diana, Alexis, and Sean. Cherished great-grandmother to Maggie and Alice. She is predeceased by her sister, Theodora "Dora" and brother, Constantino "Dino". Helen worked as an executive secretary at United Mutual Savings Bank in New York City. She was an involved member of St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Cathedral and enjoyed her years volunteering at Holy Name Hospital and local elementary school.

Helen and her husband spent many of their beloved years together living around the world during his Army career and continued their travels years afterwards. She had a zest for life that continued throughout her nineties and instilled the same in her children and grandchildren. She never shied away from a dance floor and loved being with her family.

The family will receive friends on Sunday 3:00 - 7:00 PM at the Frank A. Patti and Kenneth Mikatarian Funeral Home 327 Main Street "opposite the Fort Lee Library". All are asked to assemble on Monday at 10:30 am at St. John The Theologian Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tenafly for the celebration of her funeral service.
