Obituary of George Souflis

George Souflis of Englewood Cliffs, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, surrounded by his children.  He was two weeks shy of his 90^th birthday. 

George was born in Athens, Greece on March 1, 1933.  The little boy who grew up in poverty during the Axis occupation of Greece was a diligent, bright student, and he went on to earn his economics degree from Athens’ Anotati Emboriki Scholi.  But George was built for bigger dreams.  And in 1956, he left on a ship to America with $500 to his name destined for Saint Louis University, where he obtained his master’s degree in economics.  Upon graduation, George began his life-long career as a public accountant.  In 1969, he married the love of his life, Mina Souflis (née Velianiti) and they spent the next 52 years together nurturing their family, travelling around the world, and serving their church.  When Mina predeceased George in 2021, he faithfully continued their legacy for their children and grandchildren. 

George lived his life with gusto, always brimming with positivity and playfulness. His brilliant mind and entrepreneurial spirit enabled him to launch his own successful accounting business, a business which carries on today through his treasured son.  A fiercely proud philhellene, his beloved homeland was never far from his heart, and he always stayed true to his humble roots, making sure to finish his plate at every meal in gratitude for the gift of food.  He was truly loved by his many clients and friends throughout the years, well-known for his humor, kindness, loyalty, and integrity. 

George remains his children’s hero, the embodiment of their “American Dream.” He taught them the joy in working hard and the courage to reach for success, but also modeled the importance of always finding the time to enjoy and care for your family.  Even at 80 years old, he would often be found on the floor crawling around after his grandkids.  His memory lives on through his family and each of his children honored him with a namesake which they collectively call “The Georges.”  Devoted father to Anastasios Souflis and his wife Sharon, Stephanie Bogetti-D’Ambrosa and her husband David, and Mariella Kapsaskis and her husband Demetrios.   Treasured Papou to Meghan, George, Zachary, Christopher, Georgica, Dionisi, George, and Mina. Great-grandfather to Ava.   

The family will receive their friends on Tuesday, February 21^st from 4- 8 pm at the Frank A.
