Obituary of H. Karl Springob

Leonia, NJ. - H. Karl Springob, Ph.D., passed away on January 24th, 2024.  Born in Jersey City in 1930 he attended a local public school, graduated from Stevens Hoboken Academy in 1946, and subsequently received his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts degrees from American University in Washington, D.C. and then his Professional Diploma and Ph.D. through Teachers College, Columbia University.

In 1949 the family moved to Palisades Park and in 1967 he moved to Leonia with his young family.  He was married to the late Helen Patricia Jemison, loving father of Paul and wife Imanta (Bergmanis), and the late Christine Marie Springob-Nichols; loving Grandfather of Kyle M. and Laila C.

Dr. Springob was a licensed psychologist, educator and consultant over 40 years in various settings.  At the time of his retirement in 1995 he was at Stevens Institute of Technology for over 30 years as Director of Psychological Studies and Student Counseling, and Research Professor of Management.  Other academic positions included teaching at the CUNY Graduate School of Education and Teachers College, Columbia University, and held an Honorary Faculty appointment with the New Jersey College of Dentistry.  He has an extensive history of newspaper and journal articles, reports, and books.

 In addition to his work, Dr. Springob was an active volunteer for various causes.  One of his longest involvements was with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for which he served several terms as President of the Greater N.J. Chapter; member and President of the Stevens Academy Board of Trustees; pursued his musical interests through the New Jersey Chorale, for which he also served time as President; the Boy Scouts of America, as well as active membership in professional and community organizations.  He and his wife’s long history with the CF Foundation led to recognition with the Breath of Life Award, his involvement in the community led to recognition with the William Colon Community Service Award from the local Knights of Columbus; and as an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America he was recognized with the Outstanding Eagle Award from the National Eagle Scout Association and was a registered participant for over 80 years.

An Army veteran serving during the Korean War period he was stationed in the United States and Germany achieving the rank of sergeant.  At the end of his active service he received a Commission as a Medical Service Officer in the active Army Reserve and left holding the rank of Captain.  Dr. Springob held a Life Membership in American Legion Post #1.

Dr. Springob and his wife were longtime parishioners of St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Leonia, members of the choir, and where he also served on the committee to establish the Parish Council.

At Stevens Institute, planned, developed and conducted four major professional conferences on testing
issues. Many speaking engagements at schools and various conferences. At Stevens also supervised 43
student research projects with brief published summaries of their research and served as Committee Chair
and Mentor for one Doctoral Dissertation.

Other employment experiences have included: seven years as a summer camp counselor, retail store clerk
and sales clerk for Sears Roebuck Toy Department at Christmas holiday season, credit & collections agent,
factory laborer, door to door magazine sales as youth.
