My deepest condolences to the Mrkic family. Your grief is unimaginable. I did not know Ann very well, nor have I seen her in many years, but from the several times we did socialize she made a lasting impression on me. From the first time I met her, through the Luvera's, I was drawn to her sense of humor, wit, good-nature and cheerfulness. She made me feel like I'd known her forever. This is what I loved about Ann...she was a genuinely good person. People like her are hard to find in life.
I am grateful to have met and known her. My thoughts and prayers will be with you always.

In a few hours, we will be together for your funeral and we have to say that we are heartbroken beyond words.

Dear Mile and Marija,
Myong and I, along with Sangita and Jay, are beyond words in our sorrow at the loss of your beloved Ann. There's nothing more heart-wrenching and more difficult to heal for parents than the loss of a child. Your grief and that of Ann's four kids and her brother Anthony cannot but be boundless. We can scarcely fathom the depths of it. Our own association with Ann began as soon as Sangita's, and we fondly recall our lively, engaging chats with her on many occasions. She was Sangita's College sister; they often took the same classes, co-anchored a radio show and took daily delight in each other's company (Sangita still says no one has ever made her laugh harder). Ann naturally became a vibrant and loving presence at Sangita's wedding as one of her bridesmaids. We remember her kindness, her wit, her exuberant laugh, and her friendship as a rare gift. May Ann’s warm smile remain your strongest memory of her and always give you strength. Her memory will always be treasured by our family.

My heart is broken at the news that the brightest of lights, Ann, has some how slipped away. I cannot begin to imagine how you coping with this tragedy. I am so incredibly sorry for your pain and loss. To Kate, Emma, Niko and Mathew, your mother loves you more than any mother has loved her children. Always remember her warmth, humor, care and kindness. You will make her proud. You have already done that in spades by being the amazing people you are!
To Marija, Miles and Anthony, Ann also loved all of you beyond words. She would always talk about you in so lovingly. You have being amazing rocks for Ann. Thank you for your steadfast love.
I would like to visit you, but since I am in California and just learning the news, I cannot make it to the service. Let's please stay in touch and talk about ways to honor Ann's memory and support her amazing kids.

Dear Ana,
I was nine when I met you. You were the exuberant new neighbor on Fulton Ave who had an infectious laugh. I was so glad to have a new girl on the street to get to know. In the years that followed, we spent countless hours in my basement playing Barbies. We would giggle at ridiculous things that only we got.
You lived only a few houses away but the view of your house from mine was obstructed by overgrown rose bushes. Tata, my beloved grandmother (who you also loved and called “Tata”), did not want me to walk past the rose bushes where she wouldn’t be able to see me, so you mostly had to come to me. My inability to go beyond the rose bushes would become a running joke between us.
Over the years, we were there for each other, attending each other’s important and not-so-important life events. We ran around in each other’s’ houses as if we lived there too. From the time we were young, you would often come over and then spend hours talking to my parents, who loved you too.
On summer evenings when we were kids, you would be at the picnic table in my backyard. My dad would feed you home-grown peaches, and my sister Nancy, my father, you, and I would play Gin Rummy. I remember too being little girls and giggling at nothing in particular while swinging on the swing under the grapevine in my yard. These are some of my favorite childhood memories.
I remember how messy your room always was, your “Saab phase” when you would yell “Saab!” whenever one would drive by, your smiles, your hearty laugh, the way you would raise one of your eyebrows when you thought you were making an important point, your selfless and unconditional friendship, your positive energy, and the love you had for your Croatian background, your children, and your family.
My grandmother Tata would always say “Ay qué linda” (Spanish for “Oh, how pretty/lovely”) when she saw you. You were lovely and beautiful Ann, and my heart is broken.

To Mr and Mrs Mrkic, Anthony and family, and Ana's children, I have written you private cards that I will give you when I see you. In the meantime, much love, strength and support from my family to yours, Mary Luvera and Adam and Rio Federman.
