Carmelo was the sweetest most delightful conversationalist in all my holiday memories of him. A true gentleman! I am sending my heartfelt condolences to his wonderful family, and to all that knew him well and loved him. May he rest in peace in the arms of our Lord!

I remember clearly that Valentines Day dinner the 3 of us shared in Paris. After having to cancel a coveted reservation at Spring, they called me to say a table for 4 opened up on Feb 14th.....Red (Gera) and Carmelo were my Valentines Day dates!
A young couple ( who were VERY finicky eaters) sat behind us....we had just finished eating these amazing oysters and I asked for more but the waited said there were only enough for all the nights reservations ( there was no menu ). I said to him “ can we have theirs? ( pointing to the couple) They won’t eat them. The guys expression was like “ yeah right”......when he served the oysters to them the wife looked and was repulsed and said dramatically “ TAKE them AWAY!”
The waiter turned on his heals and plopped them on our table and exclaimed “ Voila Monsieur! You were exactly correct!”
He asked how I knew they wouldn’t eat them and I told him I overheard them speaking. They were from Chicago and went to the restaurant because the chef was also from Chicago...... they are steak and potato folks and the only seafood they probabilities eat is fried.
Later the waiting cane back with boudin noir ( blood sausage) When the wife ( w a curled lip) asked what is was, the waiter said “ short ribs Madame!” Then turned to us w a big wink!!!
