Millie,
After years of losing touch, I had you on my mind. On Friday, April 8th I spoke with an elderly Puerto Rican woman seeking housing - and she sounded just like you. I searched Google on Sunday, your Birthday, to find a phone number for one of the girls I knew since grade school, Gina or Lizzie. I used to call you on your birthday, remember? But instead of finding contact information, I found your obituary - - I'd missed hearing your voice by two days. I'm sorry I didn't get to see you again. I will always remember you fondly - always such a sweet soul with me. May you rest in the Lord's embrace, Millie. May the girls, your grandchildren and all your family members be consoled by Him and may they celebrate your life with all the love you deserve. Until we meet again.
Love,
Diana

“The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done, from fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won; exult O shores, and ring O bells!” Walt Whitman
Imagination is this wonderful capacity to image a world beyond what is obviously given. To create a world we would like to venture into when necessary. That’s the work of poets and novelists and artists.
I imagine, with Aunt Tita’s last breath, loved ones she cried for, those she mourned for, all gathered to meet her at eternity’s gate, to welcome her home.
Faith values the vast mystery of God and death—with all the wonder and worship it inspires. Faith reminds us all, death has no sting and there is no more suffering. Aunt Tita’s death is a tender moment for the entire Garcia Family. I don’t want to, in anyway, minimize our loss and grief. Neither do I want to regard this holy moment cavalierly. However, amid the brokenness of loss, imagination allows us to image her safe eternal arrival. Faith reverently honors Aunt Tita’s eternal victory.
