Obituary of Beniamino Mattessich

Beniamino “Bennie” Mattessich, age 93, of Ridgefield formerly of Edgewater and Hoboken, NJ.  Passed peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Born in Susak, Croatia, formerly Italy.  Bennie immigrated to the United States at the age of 17 in 1947, residing with his uncle, John Mattessich.   A carpenter by trade, he was a 60 year member of Local #6 of Hudson County.   Later worked at Jersey City Medical Center before happily retiring.

His happiest moments were spent with his wife, children, grandchildren and a great grandchild.   Always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone he met.  During his spare time, Bennie enjoyed salt water fishing and playing checkers.  A former president and member of Saint Nicholas Society of Sansego since its founding.

Beloved husband of 65 years to Maria Mattessich (nee: Piccinich). Ben met Maria while chauffeuring her family after their arrival in America. Devoted father of Mathilda “Mattie” Milano, Michael Mattessich, Janet Smith and her husband Steve, and  Susan Wakshlag and her husband Joe.  Cherished grandfather of Jessica, Lauren, Madison, Max, Alex, Ashleigh and Ben.  Adored great grandfather of Riley Maria.  Predeceased by his parents, Matteo and Maria, and eight siblings. Beloved brother to Mary Tubonjic. Revered brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend to many.

The family will receive their friends on Friday from 4-8 pm at the Frank Patti and Kenneth Mikatarian Funeral Home 327 Main Street “opposite the Fort Lee Library”.   The funeral will leave on Saturday at 9am for the celebration of his funeral mass in the Historic Church of the Madonna at 9:30 am.  Entombment to follow at Madonna Mausoleum.  For further information please call (201) 944-0100.
