Dear Brian,
I am saddened by the passing of my Social Studies colleague at Bergenfield High School. She was a wonderful creative teacher whose class students enjoyed. I always enjoyed her wicked sense of humor and her contagious laughter. When I think of Karen , it is of her laughing. Doug and I enjoyed the times we dined together. I was busy caring for Doug in his final days , so am posting this
after his recent passing. It is a sorrowful time for both of us but our memories of our loved ones that will sustain us.

My dear Brian,
It is with a heart-felt emotion that I write my thoughts of Karen. I had heard of her from Bob who spoke about their high school and college days. Of course he also spoke of you as well. I was always curious as to why Bob had not kept in touch with his friends from New Jersey. I mentioned this to him during several trips to visit his family in New Jersey early in our relationship. Then, Karen took steps to reconnect with Bob. I have always felt very appreciative that she did that as it kindled a friendship that has now lasted for decades. During our early visits, as I got to know you both, it was exciting for this southern boy to spend time with you in your beautiful home coming to understand the culture of northern New Jersey. Not only did I come to see the friendship that already existed between Bob and yourselves, but also I began to feel a bond of friendship developing in my own right. With fondness I recall so many evenings of laughter and good times enjoying drinks, great food and pleasant conversation. Truly, whenever we decided to travel up to Jersey we looked forward to our times together. There were also the times you came to Florida and I will not forget our trip to Boston as well. Karen was delightful! Her sense of humor, intelligence and her insights were always fresh and made for a great time. It was an honor to have been blessed with her friendship. Though we will always miss Karen, we anticipate being with you in the future. When time helps to heal the pain of separation, we will remember sweet Karen again with laughter.
God bless you Brian. We are always here for you.

A letter to Karen,
As I reflect on our 55 year friendship I can’t help but thank you for the many wonderful times we shared, starting with our Cliffside Park high school days where we benefited from great teachers like Ms. Carlton (history) and Ms. Hazelton (English). They were perhaps the reason we both followed the path of public education. We, along with other friends, chose Montclair State as our college of choice. I cherish the fun times we shared while car pooling with Maryann. I do not think 3 people shared so many laughs on Rt. 80 for 4 years. Montclair’s motto is “carpe diem” seize the day, which we managed to succeed in doing during those years. I thank you for the formal sorority cotillions we attended in NYC which were elegant. I thank you for introducing me to your parents Bill & Betty and of course your dear husband Brian. Tony and I cherish the holiday events we shared at your lovely Tudor style home in Teaneck. Your passing is all too soon. I can only conclude by stating that our friendship has been so rich in memories that I would not trade them for anything in the world. Thank you for being a special friend.
Bob

Brian,
Karen glided through her very own fairy gate and heaven gained a beautiful Angel. She had Capricorn style and did things her own way! Karen had me from her first sarcastic joke right down to that awesome snake ring. She was a vibrant soul that loved you to bits. I will remember her fondly with her beautiful smile and inside jokes we shared at your retirement dinner. May you find comfort in fond memories too.
My deepest condolences,
Maryann Tiesler

Dear Brian,
Karen was my loyal friend for 58 years. She was creative, talented, and had a wicked sense of humor. From the Beatles, through high school, our sorority days at Montclair, Disco, teaching, her artist career ... she always had a witty story. So many stages of my life that are defined by her being there. Pete and I were lucky to have shared so happy many hours with her.
You were the light of her life.
Our hearts go out to you,
Love,
Maryann Cavallo
